Want to learn something new in the kitchen?
Want to impress your friends with a great culinary skill?
Here’s a really short step-by-step photo instruction on HOW TO REMOVE SCALES FROM FISH!
It’s SO easy to do, it’s almost ridiculous!
Trust me . . . if I can do this, anyone can do this.
Plus it only takes about 10 minutes MAX!
After viewing the tutorial, let me know if you have any questions; I’m happy to help!
FIRST, place the fish in a clean, DEEP sink — the scales will fly all over and the walls inside a deep sink help keep the scales close to clean up
make sure to look out for the sharp bones sticking out of the fish
take a clean, dry paper fowl and pat dry the entire fish so it isn’t slippery when you’re handling it
when dried, the fish won’t have a shiny-wet look, but will have a dull, matte appearance
use another dry, clean paper towel to securely hold the fish BY THE TAIL
use the back of a clean butter knife — no special equipment necessary!
starting with the middle of the fish, move the knife and scrape off the scales going towards the head of the fish . . . then continue at the tail end, scraping in the same direction towards the head, and then finish scraping the scales by the head. It only takes a few minutes for a whole fish
run fresh water over the fish after removing the scales
the scaled fish will be perfectly smooth when you run your hand over the skin
Now your fish is ready to be baked or fried whole, or even cut up in filets!
Let me know if you have any questions, I’ll be happy to help you!

I usually leave this job to my husband. It seems easy enough for me to do it, though.
Hi Annamaria, My husband wouldn’t even know the first thing about cleaning fresh fish, let alone even ‘catch’ one fishing. On top of that, he doesn’t eat fish, unless I do. His loss, and my gain! LOL!
